The Matthew Hoppe Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on assisting young athletes hone their skills through soccer camps, mentorships, and other resources. We believe that every young person should have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, no matter what their background or obstacle may be. In addition to guiding young athletes on the field, we also place importance on helping develop strong character off the field.

Where it all began

Growing up, Matthew's dream was to represent his country and play professional soccer. He began playing soccer at the age of four and quickly fell in love with the game. His father coached him for most of his early career, and by the age of 10, Matthew had progressed from local soccer leagues to academy teams. In high school, he got the opportunity to play at the FC Barcelona state-side academy in Arizona. It was during this time where he transitioned from midfield to striker.

After ranking fifth nationally his junior year, and first his senior year, Matthew turned down a full ride scholarship to San Diego State University after high school to pursue playing with the FC Schalke U19 team in Germany. His second year started on the second team for FC Schalke. After four short months on the second team, Matthew earned his spot to play for FC Schalke’s professional team who were struggling to have success at winning games. Matthew did not let this obstacle intimidate him, and it was only a short time later, on January 9th, 2021, when Matthew scored a hat trick against TSG Hoffenheim – breaking the team’s 30 winless game streak and finishing his season with six goals. A few months later, Matthew received his first call up to the United States Men’s National Soccer Team, and by July, Matthew had one assist and one goal with the USMNT Gold Cup. To date, he has earned eight caps with the USMNT.

Although there have been many challenges that have stood in the way of success throughout his career, Matthew believes in the importance of continuing to work towards excellence both on and off the field no matter the circumstance. “Character is important not only during good times, but also during times of adversity,” Matthew said during an interview with Hiberian FC.

Tom Hoppe, Soccer Camp Director

Tom Hoppe was born and raised in Southern California. After graduating from Wilson High School, he attended Azusa Pacific on a soccer scholarship. He ultimately transferred to several more universities over the four year time frame and graduated at CSUSB with a Business degree in Business Management. Mr. Hoppe coached all three of his children in soccer from a young age. Although all of the children loved sports, Matthew had a passion for soccer. Tom coached Matthew up to the age of 12 years old. Realizing that Matthew desired to play at a higher level, it was decided that we would move Matthew from the club teams here locally in Yorba Linda to academy teams. It was a huge change for our family and it was a hard decision for us as Mr. Hoppe loved to coach his son’s team, but knowing that in order to grow in the game of soccer the competition would have to be more difficult. However, that did not end Mr. Hoppe’s coaching. He coached teams locally and still personally trained and coached Matthew. He worked with Matthew to develop his skills and abilities almost every day as needed with skills drills and by communicating what was needed.

Mr. Hoppe is very passionate about soccer and loves the game. His skill set is seeing areas of weakness and improving on them through repetitive and skills based drills. He assesses strengths and weaknesses and communicates to them what they need to work on. Communication with the children is important so that they can learn and understand the game. He desires that success can come to all children whether it be through soccer, education, career and family. As Soccer Camp Director of the Matthew Hoppe Foundation, it is his desire to bring development of skill sets, provide analytics for improvement and activities they can do personally to improve their skills on and off the field. His hope that through this they will have success and opportunities to play in College, Semi-Pro, Professional and to use the skills they have learned through hard work and diligence that they can be successful at whatever they set their mind to.
